Play-downs – a new way to select teams for Regional and Sectional tournaments

Starting this year (2014-2015) RI Hockey has adopted a new process by which to select Peewee and Squirt teams to represent our state at Tier II and Tier III Regional and Sectional tournaments. In the past, the teams that qualified to go to these tournaments were based on the results of league play-offs. However, with the success and growth of our league that now extends well into Massachusetts, it’s become somewhat problematic to use the SNEHC to determine these Rhode Island representatives.

The new process that we will use to identify these teams is referred to as “play-downs”. Early in the season, teams were asked to declare their intentions as to whether they wanted to compete for one of these post-season tournaments. The teams that were interested then played (or are playing) separate head-to-head games to determine who would go to which tournament. Teams scheduled to meet in a play-down game could however, agree use an upcoming league game (between each other) to act as their play-down game as well.
